Don't Let Polybutylene Pipes Devalue Your Property

Behind your home's walls could be a hidden problem. If you reside in an area with a chemically-treated water system using chlorine and fluoride, your home's polybutylene pipe will eventually rupture. This event is called webbing or veining.

Polybutylene piping eventually will cause major repairs and lower your home's value. Oxidants from the public water system react to the pipe material causing deterioration. Leaks will eventually severely damage your home's insulation, drywall, and wood frame.

Trust only an experienced expert to re-pipe your home. Call on Sun City Center Plumbing Services Inc for a solution.

How to Identify Polybutylene Pipes

  • Color: blue, silvery gray, and black for 1/2" to 1" pipes
  • Identifiable stamping: PB and a string of numbers (PB2110)
  • Common location areas:
    • Indoors: behind walls and basement ceilings, and near water heaters, sinks, bathtubs, and toilets
    • Outdoors: near the main water shut off valve, at the water meter, entrances through the basement, behind concrete slabs, or within crawl space
  • Other signs:  Look for copper, aluminum, brass, or acetal (plastic resin) crimp fittings were used to link pieces of poly pipe to plumbing joints and fittings. The presence of these pipe fittings increases the likelihood that the plumbing pipes are polybutylene

Common Polybutylene Myths

  • I don't have a problem because I have metal fittings.

FALSE: Copper and brass fittings installed after 1990 still have fitting failures from pinholes to total fitting collapse.

  • The problem lies in the fittings or joints and not in the polybutylene pipe.

Fifty percent of leaks occur come from pipe failure.

We had a leak in our granddaughter's house. The plumber was there in next to no time and diagnosed a leaking copper pipe. We had an estimate by that afternoon. Repiping was scheduled 4 days out.

The plumbers were there bright and early and had the work ready for inspection by evening. The inspector was impressed with the work the crew did. We are happy customers and will recommend Sun City Plumbing.
